This paper describes a six-legged robot based on the features of anagile insect, the American cockroach, Periplanetaamericana. The robot is designed with insect-like leg structure andplacement, and actuators that mimic muscles. A test legis also described that shows how sensory feedback can serve as thebasis of the control system for the robot in order for itto achieve the degree of adaptability of locomotion over roughterrain exhibited by insects. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
